The Contribution of Music Therapy Intervention in Child and Adolescent’s Coping with Grief after the Loss of a Loved One
    English
    • A large number of children have experienced the death of at least one loved during childhood or adolescence. Experiencing loss at this sensitive time in a person’s life can lead to behavioral, emotional, academic and social problems, unless protective factors intervene. This systematic review aims to investigate the effect of music therapy intervention on children and adolescents who are grieving after the loss of a loved one. The role of music therapy is explored both in relation to the music therapy methods used, such as improvisation, songwriting and music listening, as well as in relation to the age of the participants, and the group or individual intervention. The systematic review identified nine (9) studies, published from 2000 to 2019, that studied the effect of music

therapy on bereaved children and adolescents. The number of participants included in the nine studies is 149. Research results show the beneficial effect of music therapy on bereaved children and adolescents in terms of emotional expression, personal growth, social skills and coping with grief. It is not clear whether group or individual music therapy intervention is more effective, nor whether any of the methods used (improvisation, songwriting, music listening) has greater effect.
